I have 3 bunks on board, one on each side of the boat, which can then be either the high side, or the low side, and then the bench at the chart table has a cushion that is full length and I can sleep there too. The advantage of the chart table bench is that, if I wake up for a moment, at a glance I can see the pertinent data on the boat: direction, speed, etc. At each of the bunks, we have added some kind of safety belt, so that if conditions warrant it, I can tie myself in. In Vendée Globe 2008-9, I was thrown out of the bunk once when asleep, and landed on the floor with a one-point landing – my left eyebrow. A bloody gash was opened that took some time to get closed, and then a few weeks to heel. I’d rather not do that again!
